This brave carrier pigeon was the talk of the town in WWI. This bird worked for the U.S. Army and delivered 12 critical messages in France. Unfortunately, in 1918, Cher Ami was shot and suffered injuries to the breast and leg. She still made it back to her destination, though, and ended up delivering the message that brought rescue to 194 soldiers who didn’t have food or defense. She died a year later, but her legacy lives on. Her stuffed body now resides in Washington, D.C.
