While California is no longer known as the Grizzly State, it still has a grizzly on it’s state flag. That bear is known as Monarch, who was a 1,200 lb wild grizzly bar that had been captured by William Randolph Hearst.

Monach was a star, bringing in people from all over to the Woodard’s Garden, and then to the Golden Gate Park. He died in 1911, and a wild California grizzly bear hasn’t been seen since 13 years after his death in 1924.
